Navigating transportation in Kashmir is different from other parts of India due to local taxi union regulations. Whether you're flying into Srinagar or arriving by train, this guide will help you understand how taxi services work here.
1. The Union Taxi System Explained
Kashmir operates on a strict union-based taxi system to ensure fair distribution of work among locals. A cab hired from Srinagar can only drop you at your hotel in destinations like Gulmarg, Pahalgam, or Sonmarg. It cannot take you for local sightseeing within those areas.
2. Destination-Specific Rules
- Pahalgam: For ABC valley (Aru, Betaab, Chandanwari), you must hire a local union cab from the Pahalgam taxi stand.
- Gulmarg: Outside vehicles can only drop you at the main parking/hotel. To visit the Gondola base or other spots, you either walk, hire a local cab, or take an ATV/pony.
- Sonmarg: To visit Thajiwas Glacier or Zero Point, you must hire a local union cab or ponies.
3. Average Rates (2026)
Expect to pay around ₹2,500 - ₹3,500 per day for a standard Sedan (Etios/Dzire) and ₹3,500 - ₹5,000 for an SUV (Innova/Crysta) for inter-city travel.
